Regarding her illness that had occurred just two days before the performance, Avril out shone her previous tours to date.

On the 26<sup>th September 2011 the Canadian rock star came to Manchester in one of her preliminary concerts of her black star tour. The gig took place in the 02 Manchester Apollo with doors opening at 6:30pm, slightly earlier for 02 priority. The whole bottom of the venue was specifically for those who had purchased a standing ticket. Avril’s support act played for around 40 minutes and they where a recently signed band called ‘Lawson’. Unfortunately before Avril had even managed to get on stage the temperature of the venue was just too much for a selected few who fainted and had to be whisked away out of the crowd by venue security.

When Avril finally entered the stage the people went wild as she entered the stage holding just a green glowing star and the stage filled with smoke that then wandered through the standing rows. She sand around 17-20 songs including her hits; Complicated,Sk8er boi and her new single Smile. She also sang I’m with you which was a huge hit with the crowd as the whole Apollo sang along acoustically while Avril admired their singing. Aswell as singing her own songs she did a cover of Coldplay’s ‘Fix you’. It started off beautifully until she forgot the words in the middle of the song and then began laughing along with the crowd before returning to the song very professionally.</sup>

This article has been taken from kerrang! magazine. It is a gig review from a band called 'Avenged Sevenfold'. 

Most of the page has been covered by photographs from the bands gig. There is one main image which is in the centre of the page which has smaller images around it. These smaller images have a small white border around them, and they are not placed upright some are slanted. the main central image is of the lead singer of the band, where as the other pictures are of the rest of the band and the crowd. 

The review begins with the headline stating the name of the band, location of the gig and the date. It then rates out of 5 the overall atmosphere etc of the night with 'k's'. This 'K' is for Kerrang. It then has a short 'by line' and underneath is a subheading summarising the night in a few words for a short paragraph. It then starts with the first two words of the article in drop capitals. 

The review starts with what a prediction from the lead singer, but then the article goes on to talk in point of view of the writer who was the viewer in the crowd of the concert. At the very bottom left there is a small black box with heading 'how was it for you?' following this there is a small interview with the lead singer.

Planning production

My front cover image will be a medium shot in a studio of a girl with the 'rock' stereotype look about her.

My double page spread is going to be about Avril Lavigne's Gig, a review of it including picures. I will also have a small interview of someone who attended the gig and what they thought of it. The photo's i will need will be of Avril Lavigne, long shots of her on stage. I will also need a small image of the interviewee this will be a close up.

Because my magazine is Rock and the title means to be angry or troublesome, the picture was too soft of an expression to be the front cover image.



The reason for not using this photo is that her body language isn't appealing enough and it doesn't draw attention to the readers. She has quite a bored expression.



This picture was not suitable because her expression is not angry enough .



This photo could be potential if it was zoomed in  however the only bad thing is that there is no direct address with the readers.



This was the final chosen image for the front cover. Her face is very questioning and connotes attitude and so does her lifting her rim of her top up as it has another solo artist on the t-shirt. There is also very strong direct address.

Publication Plan

Title: Vex
Positioning statement: Go crazy with rock


Frequency of publication: Monthly
Price: £2.70


Distribution: Newsagents and supermarkets, Music shops (e.g. HMV), Instrument shops.


Rationale: The approach of the magazine is very much to please the fans and give them information on what they want to hear about. We will give opinions and reviews and the articles will focus very much on the information that the readers want to know.


Style: Informal using humour. The magazine is generally for teens-young adults so the language will not be too advanced but easy to read and relevant to the magazine genre. It will follow Red top tabloid style of presentation; short paragraphs and slang.


Images will be dominant features of all layouts.
